Rieger Closes Season, Career in Style with Overtime Game-Winner at Providence

10.31.25 | Field Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tied 2-2 at the end of regulation after two goals from freshman Lucia Magro, senior Peyton Rieger delivered the game-winning goal to close the 2025 season and her Temple career in a 3-2 overtime road win over Providence on Friday afternoon at Lennon Family Field.

The Owls (12-6, 3-4 BIG EAST) closed the 2025 campaign with back-to-back wins, while the Friars (8-9, 1-6 BIG EAST) dropped their fourth straight contest.

Magro registered both regulation goals for the Owls, tying the contest at 1-1 and 2-2 to force overtime. Halle Aschenbach and Marsha Ariesen tallied assists for Temple.

How It Happened

Providence struck first in the opening quarter as Bo Martina rocketed a shot into the lower-left corner of the cage off a penalty corner, with Johanna Mahner credited with the assist.

Magro answered soon after, carrying possession into the circle, beating a defender, and firing a shot into the back of the cage to even the score.

The Friars regained the lead in the third quarter when Lily Procaccianti tipped in a shot from Martina with 6:11 remaining in the frame.

Magro came up clutch again late in regulation. After receiving a bouncing pass in front of the goal, she fired a shot that was initially saved but quickly pounced on the rebound to tie the game at 2-2 with 4:07 remaining.

Rieger sealed the victory late in the first overtime period. After a pass from Ariesen was deflected by a defender, Rieger controlled the loose ball and fired it into the net, capping the season — and her collegiate career — in dramatic fashion.

By the Numbers

Temple held advantages in shots (14-8) and shots on goal (12-4), while Providence owned a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.

Goalkeepers Isabella Ospitale and Alex Lepore split time in the cage for the Owls. Ospitale made one save in 45 minutes of action, while Lepore turned away one shot in 23 minutes of relief. Providence's tandem of Ava Porter and Zoe Onken combined for nine saves, with Onken stopping five and Porter adding four.

With her pair of goals, Magro closed her freshman season with 20 points on nine goals and two assists — the most by an Owl freshman since 1987, when all-time points leader Jane Catanzaro recorded 35 points on 15 goals and five assists.

Rieger finished her senior campaign with 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points — the most by a Temple player since Alyssa Delp's 37-point senior season in 2015. Her five game-winning goals lead the BIG EAST. She currently ranks tied for second in the conference in both points and goals and seventh in assists.

Temple concludes the 2025 season ranked second in the conference in goals, points, scoring margin, and shots, while leading the league in penalty corners.
