LAST TIME OUT
A banged up Temple Owls fell to a well-rested and well-prepared East Carolina Pirates team Saturday afternoon by a score of 45-14. The Pirates came into the game on 16-days rest, last playing on Thursday, Oct. 16. The result brings Temple to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play while the game lifts ECU to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the American. The opening quarter of the game proved to be a rollercoster for both sides. The Pirates struck first on offense, marching down the field in less than two minutes to get the opening points by way of a Katin Houser seven-yard pass to Yannick Smith to put ECU up 7-0 early. A few drives later, the teams would exchange turnovers. A deep throw by Houser would be deflected and the ball ended up in the hands of safety Pooh Lawton for the first FBS interception of his career. The following drive, however, Temple quarterback Evan Simon would throw his first interception of the 2025 season. Ja'Marley Riddle would jump a route and fall on the ball, and the ECU offense would make Temple pay just one play later. On an end around, Anthony Smith took the ball 45-yards into the end zone to extend the Pirate lead to 14-0. Another ECU turnover would lead to the first points of the day for the Owls. Temple's Jamere Jones would punch out and recover an ECU fumble that would be followed by a Jay Ducker touchdown run for the home squad. The game sat at 14-7 ECU at the end of the opening frame.
The second quarter started with a Temple offensive drive. The Owls put together what would end up being its best drive of the day on offense. The nine-play, 75-yard drive featured timely throws and strong running by the backs. Freshman running back Keveun Mason had a coming-out party on the scoring drive for Temple. Mason collected his first career catch for five yards and followed that up with the longest rush of his young career. The 29-yard rush would be the equalizing touchdown for the Owls, which was also his first career touchdown. The teams sat tied at 14 points with 11:20 remaining in the first half. From that point on the Temple offense would go cold, but the ECU offense would continue to put up big numbers. The Pirates took the lead back through a 12-play, 73-yard touchdown drive that was as tough and as physical as one could ever see. East Carolina opened the drive with a seven-yard pass play and proceeded to follow that up with 11-straight rushing plays. Marlon Gunn Jr. picked up 35 yards on seven-straight plays for ECU. The drive, however, was capped off by a 15-yard rush by Mike Wright Jr to put ECU up 21-14. The Pirates would then display flashiness on offense. The next offensive drive for the Pirates would be a quick three-play, 73-yard possession finished off by a 59-yard catch and run by Yannick Smith. Temple's efforts to cut into the ECU lead before the end of the second quarter would not be successful and the teams went into the lockeroom with the score as is.
Temple did not find much of a spark on offense coming out of the break, and the defense continued to struggle to stop the high-octane ECU offense. The Pirates would find points one way or another on each of the three offensive possessions the team had in the third while keeping Temple off the board at the same time. London Montgomery would finish off a 10-play drive with a rushing touchdown of his own from 19-yards out to get the score to 35-14. The following five-play drive by the Temple offense would allow punter Dante Atton to pin the Pirate offense back deep, and he did just that. He hit a beautiful punt that put the ECU offense at its own three-yard line, but that did not seem to deter the effectiveness of their offense. Eight plays and 97-yards later, Gunn Jr. would punch it in from one-yard out to make it 42-14. A late field goal by ECU kicker Nick Mazzie would end the scoring and the day and the Pirates would sail back to North Carolina with a 45-14 victory.
ARMY IN 2025
Army enters week 11 with an overall record of 4-4 and a 2-3 American Conference record in 2025. The Black Knights topped the Falcons of Air Force in week 10 by a score of 20-17. Army won the game in walk-off fashion as kicker Dawson Jones knocked through a 27-yard field goal as time expired to give his team the win. The Army offense constructed an eight-play, 65-yard drive with 1:26 on the clock to set Jones up for the kick, and he was able to come through. A majority of Army's contests this season have been decided by one score or less, one way or another. The Black Knights have two wins by a field goal this season and three losses by one score. Perhaps the highlight of the season was a massive 31-13 win over the UAB Blazers that was followed up by a 24-7 win over Charlotte. He is followed by slot back Noah Short with 362 rushing yards. Army is nifty through the air as well. Wide receiver Brady Anderson has two receiving scores on the year and 306 receiving yards.
