Turner’s Double-Double Leads Owls to Victory Over Tulane

NEW ORLEANS — Temple women's basketball (15-10, 9-5 AAC) defeated the Tulane Green Wave (15-9, 8-5 AAC), 73-56, Saturday afternoon inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. Leading scorer Kaylah Turner earned her first collegiate double-double with 22 points, shooting 8-18 from the field and 11 rebounds. Jaleesa Molina earned her sixth double-double of the season following her 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

  • Tulane won the tip, scoring the first points of the game five seconds into the quarter and converting on a three-point play, giving the Green Wave an early 3-0 lead.
  • Jaleesa Molina grabbed the first offensive rebound of the game with a putback, cutting into Tulane's lead 3-2 at the 9:02 mark.
  • Both teams struggled to find a basket, collectively missing 10 consecutive shots.
  • Temple gained a one-point advantage after Molina forced a turnover, and Kaylah Turner capitalized with a fast break layup with 5:54 remaining, 4-3.
  • Out of the 4:32 media timeout, Tulane went on a 9-0 run, extending its lead to nine, 13-4, with three minutes to play in the first quarter.
  • Anissa Rivera started Temple's 9-0 run after Temple secured its seventh steal of the game. During the run, Rivera contributed five points, while Turner and Tristen Taylor added two each, bringing the quarter to a 13-13 tie.

Second Quarter

  • To open the second quarter, Tulane was fouled 42 seconds into the quarter and drilled both free throws, giving them a two-point advantage.
  • Temple made three consecutive field goals, extending its lead to three, 20-17, with 7:28 remaining in the half.
  • Tulane responded with back-to-back threes and a jumper, regaining the lead, 25-22, before the 4:44 media timeout.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets during the end of the quarter, keeping the lead within three points.
  • Turner had double digits (13) points after drilling a three at the 1:35 mark. Turner drew a foul and made both free throws to close the quarter. Temple led by four, 34-30, after the first half.

Third Quarter

  • Molina scored the first basket of the second half with a layup at 9:17 left in the quarter.
  • Temple started the quarter strong, forcing Tulane into two early turnovers and capitalizing to extend its lead to 10 points, 40-30, before Tulane called a timeout at the 8:12 mark.
  • Temple extended its run to 15-0 before the 4:58 media timeout. Molina (6), Rivera (2), East (3), and Turner (3) extended its lead to 19 points.
  • Molina reached her sixth double-double of the season, securing her 10th rebound of the game midway through the third quarter.
  • Rivera reached double figures (11) after a turnaround jumper, 57-40, at the 1:46 mark.
  • Although Temple opened the quarter with a 15-0 run, Tulane closed the quarter with a 15-8 run, leaving the Owls with a 12-point lead at the end of the quarter, 57-45.

Fourth Quarter

  • Tarriyonna Gary scored the first points in the final period after being fouled and making a free throw at the 9:13 mark.
  • Tulane was 0-5 from the field in the quarter before hitting a three at the 7:24 mark, with Temple ahead 62-50.
  • The Green Wave went on a 6-0 run out of the 6:01 media timeout, cutting the lead to nine, 62-53, with 5:23 remaining.
  • Taylor drew a foul and reached double figures (11) after nailing both free throws, extending Temple's lead to 11, 64-53, with just over four minutes to play.
  • East scored the Owls' last four points, giving the Owls a 15-point advantage, 70-55, with 1:25 left in the period.
  • Temple closed the game out with a 17-point win, 73-56.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Molina had four points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal in the first half.
  • Temple shot 33% (13-39), and Tulane shot 25% (7-28) from the field in the first half.
  • Tulane broke a program and AAC record the last time out against North Texas with 29 free throw attempts. In the first half, Tulane went to the free-throw line 17 times.
  • Temple led at the half despite zero points from its two leading scorers — Tiarra East (13.7 ppg) and Tarriyonna Gary (12.1 ppg).
  • Kaylah Turner finished the first half with 16 points on 6-12 shooting.
  • The Owls went on a 15-0 run to start the second half, but Tulane didn't score a basket until the 4:34 mark in the third.
  • Molina earned her sixth double-double following her 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds performance.
  • Temple reached a season-high 54 rebounds.
  • Turner earned her first collegiate double-double with 22 points and a season-high 11 rebounds performance.
