Temple University Opts In to House v. NCAA Settlement, Enhancing Opportunities for Student-Athletes

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University has announced its decision to opt in to the House v. NCAA settlement, a landmark agreement that will significantly impact the landscape of collegiate athletics by enabling universities to directly enhance student-athlete support through Name, Image, and Likeness. Â
The House v. NCAA settlement, which is scheduled for final approval on April 7, 2025, will allow Temple to offer benefits directly to student-athletes, beginning in the 2025-26 academic year. Â
The settlement also mandates that all Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals not established through university channels, and valued at $600 or more, must be reported to a third-party clearinghouse to ensure compliance with market value standards.Â
"In recent years, the landscape of intercollegiate athletics has evolved at a rapid pace, but one thing that has not changed is Temple University's continued commitment to supporting our student-athletes, and the university opting in to the House v. NCAA settlement reflects that," said Temple President John Fry. "Our goal will always be to field an athletic program that puts our student-athletes first, and that consistently fields teams that compete for conference championships."Â
"This decision reflects the University's commitment to athletics and our student-athletes," Vice President and Debbie and Stanley Lefkowitz '65 Director of Athletics Arthur Johnson added. "The ability to share a pool of benefits directly with them not only enhances their experience while at Temple but also sets our department up for success in the future."Â
Temple University's participation in this settlement aligns with American Athletic Conference members and reflects a broader trend among universities recognizing the importance of supporting student-athletes and adapting to the evolving landscape of collegiate sports. Â
