Trio of Boats Win Gold for Men's Crew at 86th Annual Dad Vail Regatta

5.10.25 | Men's Crew

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - The Temple University men's crew team earned four medals, including three gold, on a banner day at the Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday. Highlighting the triple-gold performance was the No. 16 men's varsity eight, who withstood a furious challenge from La Salle to bring home The Richard O'Brien - James Hanna Trophy for the 23rd time in program history and the first time since 2021. The win secures the Owls an automatic bid into IRA National Championships, which will be held on the same course along the Cooper River on May 30-June 1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Championship Saturday started off with a much different schedule than had been anticipated, as the Regatta moved all of the grand finals to the morning in anticipation of high winds in the afternoon.
  • As such, the men's varsity eight grand final took place just after 7:00 a.m. in the morning and Temple was ready from the start.
  • The Owls jumped out to a four-seat lead through the first 500 meters, and appeared to take control as they entered the midway point of the race.
  • Despite a push from No. 17 La Salle, Temple maintained a lead as the two crews approached the final stretch with the Owls holding on for a thrilling win by just 36-hundredths of a second.
  • In another thriller later in the morning, the second varsity eight - ranked No. 15 in the country entering the weekend - overcame tremendous efforts by Drexel and La Salle to win gold.
  • The three boats - all ranked in the top 20 nationally - finished within a second of one another, with the Owls crossing the finish line nearly seven-tenths of a second in front of the Dragons.
  • Following a bronze-medal performance by the No. 21 third varsity eight, the freshman/novice eight soundly defeated Fairfield by over five seconds to take home the victory.
  • The victory for the second varsity eight was the 16th time the crew has earned gold at Dad Vails.
