5.8.25 | Men's Crew
ABOUT THE OWLS
- A total of three Temple crews enter the event with national rankings, including the second varsity eight at No. 15 in the country.
- The 2V, stroked by sophomore Ryan Spellman, helped the Owls to a victory over La Salle, Drexel, and Saint Joseph's at the Bergen Cup Regatta on April 26.
- The varsity eight, ranked 16th in the nation in the latest IRA/IRCA Top 25 Poll, won the Bergen Cup by besting No. 17 La Salle by 3.5 seconds.
- Temple also defeated No. 21 Drexel and No. 25 Saint Joseph's, and will see all three schools at Dad Vails this weekend.
- The third and final ranked Temple boat is the third varsity eight, ranked No. 21 nationally.
- The largest collegiate regatta in the United States, the Dad Vail Regatta welcomes over 100 teams each year from the United States and Canada.
- Previously held along the Schuylkill River, the event was shifted to the Cooper River in 2023.
- The event began in 1934, with Marietta College winning the men's varsity eight race.
- Temple first tasted victory in 1983, and won five straight titles in the V8 from 1983-88.
- Beginning in 1989, the Owls began an unprecedented streak of 13 straight men's varsity eight victories.
- All told, Temple has a regatta-best 22 V8 championships and the University has won the Bratten Trophy - awarded to the team with the most total points - three times (1994, 1996, 2023).
