Four Boats Advance to Grand Finals for Men's Crew on Opening Day of Dad Vail Regatta

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - The Temple University men's crew team saw all three of its varsity eight boats and a novice eight advance to grand finals on the first day of the 86th Annual Dad Vail Regatta Friday, setting up an exciting final day of racing on Saturday. 

Due to high winds expected in the afternoon, Saturday's schedule has shifted drastically. The men's varsity eight will compete in the grand final beginning at 7:16 a.m. Here is the full schedule:

7:16 a.m. - Men's Varsity 8 Grand Final - The Richard O'Brien - James Hanna Trophy 
9:08 a.m. - Men's Second Varsity 8 Grand Final - The Bayer Trophy
9:24 a.m. - Men's Third Varsity 8 Grand Final
10:12 a.m. - Men's Freshman/Novice 8 Grand Final - The Toby Wallace Trophy
1:25 p.m. - Men's Second Varsity 4 Petite Final
1:50 p.m. - Men's Varsity 4 Petite Final

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The No. 16 varsity eight crew posted the fastest time of time trials in the morning, then defeated No. 25 Saint Joseph's by nearly four seconds to secure a prime lane for the grand final.
  • Temple's second varsity eight, who entered ranked #15 in the nation, finished with the second-fastest time trial just seven-tenths of a second behind Drexel.
  • In the semifinal round, the Owls punched their ticket to the grand final with a victory over Saint Joseph's, with the Dragons pulling out a win in the other semi over La Salle by less than two-tenths of a second.
  • The third varsity eight put together the third-fastest time during time trials and moved on to the grand final, behind only Drexel and La Salle. 
  • In the first race of the day for Temple, the novice eight had the second-fastest trial time and advanced to the grand final, with their time trailing just Fairfield by 1.8 seconds.
  • The first and second varsity four boats will compete in the petite finals after their efforts on Friday.
