Owls Down Georgetown to Extend Win Streak to Five in BIG EAST Opener

9.19.25 | Field Hockey

Peyton Rieger registers her fifth goal over the past four games

WASHINGTON – Trailing 1-0 in the first quarter, the Temple University field hockey team responded with goals in the second and third periods to defeat Georgetown, 2-1, in its BIG EAST Conference opener Friday afternoon at Kehoe Field.

The Owls (7-1, 1-0 BE) extended their winning streak to five and will enjoy the weekend off before hosting Villanova next Friday. The Hoyas (2-5, 0-1 BE) dropped their third straight and travel to Providence next week.

Reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Peyton Rieger continued her hot stretch, netting the equalizer in the second quarter. The senior captain has now scored five goals across the last four games.

Freshman Lucia Magro tallied her third game-winning goal—and fourth overall—early in the third quarter to lift Temple to its seventh win in eight contests.

How It Happened

Georgetown struck first in the 8th minute, capitalizing on a penalty corner. Izzy Lee inserted, and Ellie Johnson recorded her first goal of the season to give the Hoyas the early lead.

Temple answered in the second quarter when Rieger notched her fifth goal in four games off an assist from Halle Aschenbach.

The decisive tally came in the third quarter as Magro converted with help from Marsha Ariesen, securing Temple's fifth straight victory.

By the Numbers

Georgetown held slight advantages in shots (12-11) and shots on goal (9-6).

Temple earned an 11-9 edge in penalty corners.

GK Alex Lepore (7-0) posted a season-high eight saves, matching her career high set last season against Virginia. She has allowed just one goal across her past four appearances and 225 minutes in the cage.

Rieger became the first Owl to score in four consecutive games since Alyssa Delp, an NFHCA All-America Third Team honoree, netted goals in five straight contests to close the 2015 season. In 2014, NFHCA First Team All-American Alyssa Youtz posted 16 goals across an eight-game span.

Temple improved to 7-1 for the second time under head coach Michelle Vittese, having also done so in 2022. Before that, the Owls last opened 7-1 in 1984, when they rattled off 10 straight wins after a season-opening loss to Northwestern.

The Owls now lead the all-time series against Georgetown, 13-5, and have won four straight meetings. Since joining the BIG EAST as an associate member in 2013, Temple has claimed nine of the 12 matchups.
