Ben Albert, who returned to collegiate coaching after a year in the NFL, is in his second season as the outside linebackers coach at Temple University.

In 2011, the Owls’ defense dominated the Mid-American Conference, leading all teams in five categories while ranking No. 3 nationally in scoring defense.  Albert guided senior LB Tahir Whitehead and senior DE Adrian Robinson to All-MAC honors.

Whitehead was drafted in the fifth round by Detroit Lions in 2012, one of a school record three Draftees and a school record class of 11 NFL signees that included free agents DE Morkeith Brown (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), LB Stephen Johnson (New Orleans Saints), and DE Adrian Robinson (Pittsburgh Steelers).

After spending 14 seasons as a coach on the collegiate level, Albert served as the assistant defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2010 where he coached Temple alumnus and 3rd round draft pick DT Terrance Knighton (2005-08).

Albert previously served as associate head coach/linebackers at the University of Delaware from 2006-09. He helped the Blue Hens to the FCS title game in 2007.

The 39-year old Albert began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Massachusetts, in 1995 and worked two years there as defensive line coach and academic resource coordinator. He served as defensive line/linebackers coach at the University of Richmond from 1997-2000, helping the Spiders to two Atlantic 10 titles (1998, 2000). He returned to Richmond in 2004 as defensive line coach and special teams coordinator. He moved to the NCAA I-A level in 2001 where he served as defensive line coach at Rutgers University under head coach Greg Schiano.

A native of Paterson, N.J., Albert returned to his alma mater from 2002-03 where he served as inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. In addition to his coaching career, he worked as a minority fellowship intern with the Oakland Raiders in the summer of 1999.

Albert played nose guard and defensive tackle at Massachusetts from 1990-94, leading the Minutemen to the Yankee Conference title in 1990 as a freshman. A team captain, he earned first-team All-Yankee Conference and All-East honors as a senior in 1994 and led a defense that ranked 13th nationally in total defense. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology in 1995 and a master’s degree in education in 1997.

Albert and his wife, Lisa, have a daughter, Maya (5), and son, Elijah (3).
