Claire Kuehnel joined the Temple women's rowing coaching staff as an assistant coach under Head Coach Rebecca Grzybowski, beginning with the 2015-16 season.
Kuehnel came to Temple after spending two years coaching in Long Beach, Calif. at Long Beach Junior Crew, a competitive high school rowing club. With Long Beach, she most recently served as the varsity women's assistant coach and assistant program coordinator.
At Long Beach, Kuehnel saw the best result in program history at the Southwest Regional Championship as a novice coach. After her first year, she was promoted to varsity assistant and assistant program coordinator, where she helped club to a second place finish in the youth 4+ at the 2014 Head of the Charles, a gold medal in the junior women's lightweight 8+ at the 2015 San Diego Crew Classic, and two gold medal finishes at the 2015 Youth National Championships. Kuehnel also spent the past two summers as the head coach of the learn-to-row summer camp and the strength and conditioning camp for varsity athletes.
Kuehnel began her coaching career in 2013 at Wayland-Weston High School Rowing Association where she served as women's novice coach. Kuehnel saw great success, with her crews earning gold at the Massachusetts State Championship in both the first and second girls' novice 8+.
Kuehnel is a 2012 graduate of Boston University in Boston, Mass., where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences. She began rowing as a freshman walk-on in 2008, working her way up to serving as a three-time team captain.
Outside of her collegiate career, Kuehnel trained with the U23 USRowing Sculling Development Camp in 2009 and 2010, where she place second in the senior women's 2x at US Nationals. She also spent a year training at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Craftsbury, Vt. as a part of the U23 Small Boat Training Center. With Craftsbury, Kuehnel placed second at the U23 World Championship trials in the women's 2x, and third in both the U23 women's 2x and senior women's 2x at the Canadian Henley Regatta.
After graduation Kuehnel trained out of Riverside Boathouse on the Charles River in Boston, Mass. as a part of the high performance group.
Kuehnel, a native of North Reading, Mass., is currently attending Temple as a graduate student. She is working towards her master's degree in education in the Adult and Organizational Development program.
