Fresh off a gold-medal performance at the 2011 Pan American Games in the Men’s Eight in Guadalajara, Mexico, Joe Spencer ’06 rejoins the Temple Athletics’ community as an assistant coach of the women’s rowing team.  Spencer’s roots with his alma mater are deep as he rowed under legendary Men’s Crew Coach, Dr. Gavin White ’73, capturing Dad Vail gold in the Varsity Eight in 2004.  This was the last time Temple’s Men’s Varsity Eight won gold on the Owls’ home course.  Spencer finished his competitive rowing for Temple as the Captain of the Men’s Crew team in 2005.

Spencer began his rowing career at the St. Mark’s School in Southboro, Massachusetts.  As a 2001 NEIRA Champion in the four, and a Henley Royal Regatta competitor that summer, Spencer was a top recruit to the Men’s Crew team.  His skills as a boat-mover in the four helped lead Temple’s Freshman Four to its first ever IRA National Champion in 2002.  Spencer has competed and won gold in numerous senior and elite events at the Royal Canadian Henley.  He sculled in the 2x at 2010 Lucerne World Cup and was a finalist in the 2010 and 2011 World Championship trials in the 2x and 2-, respectively.  In the summer of 2011, Spencer and Read were victorious in the coxless-four Pan American trials on Lake Mercer in Princeton Junction. Currently, Spencer and Read are training for the 2012 London Olympic trials.

When not training, Spencer works at Boathouse Sports as one of its lead artists.  Philadelphia-based Boathouse Sports is universally recognized within the athletic apparel industry as a titan that manufactures numerous Gore-Tex and other athletic lines.  Spencer’s family is from the metro-DC area.
