Monica Gorny enters her first season as graduate coach of the women’s tennis team at Temple.
Before coming to Temple, Gorny was a three-year player for the Duke Blue Devils. While at Duke, Gorny was a captain her senior year and compiled a 42-24 overall singles record and a 64-35 doubles record. In 2009-10, Gorny started the spring season ranked 63rd nationally as a singles player. She also helped Duke defeated #2 Northwestern at NCAA Tournament and was ranked 37th with her doubles partner Mary Clayton at the end of the season.
Gorny began her collegiate career at Miami (OH) University, where she posted an overall record of 18-4. While with the Redbirds, Gorny was named MAC Freshman of the Year and was selected to the All-MAC first team after helping her team to the MAC Championship and the university’s first NCAA Tournament. While at Miami, Gorny played primarily at the first flight, posting a 14-2 record and finished the season 15-2 in doubles with Anastasia Dracheva, going unbeaten in conference play.
Gorny’s amateur career earned her berths at the French Open and Wimbledon in 2007 and 2008. She won the International Junior Championships of Botswana singles title, while also picking up a pair of doubles titles in 2008. Gorny was also chosen to take part in the 2008 Commonwealth Games and was a member of the South African Federation Cup team.
Gorny is originally from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and is currently enrolled in the Beasley School of Law at Temple.
