Willnett Crockett enters her 13th season as an assistant coach for the Temple women’s basketball staff under her former assistant coach Tonya Cardoza at the start of the 2021-22 season.
The Owls finished the 2019-20 season with a 16-15 record for their best finish in three years. Junior Mia Davis led Temple with her 18.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Davis garnered national recognition in her third season in the Cherry and White, as she was named a Top 10 Cheryl Miller Award Finalist and earned USBWA All-America Honorable Mention. Davis was named the 2019-20 Big 5 Player of the Year while earning a spot on First Team All-Big 5. The forward also earned First Team All-AAC while teammate Ashely Jones was named the American Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year alongside her Second Team recognitions in both the Big 5 and the American. Freshman Asonah Alexander rounded out the conference awards with her All-Freshman team selection.
Temple’s 2018-19 season ended with guard Alliya Butts graduating as the Owls’ all-time leader in threes (291) and steals (279), while ranking second all-time in points (1,936) and fourth in assists (414). Butts was the first player in Temple history to earn All-Conference honors in each of her four years, and just the second player in history to earn four All-Big 5 honors.
In 2017-18, Crockett helped mentor Temple's outstanding freshman class. Rookies Mia Davis and Emani Mayo both earned American Athletic Conference All-Freshman honors, while classmates Breanna Perry and Desiree Oliver both saw significant playing time.
Temple’s 2016-17 season was one of its best, as the Owls went 24-8 overall, earned an NCAA bid, and finished second in the tough American Athletic Conference. Reaching the 20-win plateau for the third-straight year, Temple notched the program's best-ever RPI of 18 (at the end of regular season play), and finished with a final RPI of 25. The Owls were ranked nationally for five weeks of the season, and beat two nationally-ranked teams (#16/17 DePaul, #20/21 USF). Locally, Temple swept through the Philadelphia Big 5, taking the title with a 4-0 record.
Crockett has been instrumental in the mentoring and development of the post players at Temple, including Atlantic 10 All-Defensive and second team selection Victoria Macaulay, American honor roll and second-team All-Conference selection Natasha Thames and All-Freshman honoree Taylor Robinson.
In addition to working primarily with the post players, Crockett's responsibilities include recruiting, scouting, practice scheduling, equipment coordinator, individual skill development and serving as the liaison to strength & conditioning.
Crockett is a 2006 graduate of the University of Connecticut, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. A solid post player, Crockett played an intricate part in two Final Fours at UConn. During her four-year career, she helped the squad to two BIG EAST regular season titles, two BIG EAST Tournament titles, and two National Championships. She was also a part of the record breaking Division-I 70-game winning streak from 2001-03.
Upon the completion of her college career, Crockett was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks in the second round (22nd pick overall) of the 2006 WNBA Draft and played for the Phoenix Mercury as well as overseas in such places as Africa, Latvia and Lithuania prior to being hired in 2009.
A Los Angeles, Calif., native, Crockett was a two-time Nike All-American under James Anderson at Nathaniel Narbonne High School in Harbor City. As a junior, Crockett helped Narbonne to back-to-back national titles. The 2002 graduate earned WBCA and McDonald’s All-American honors and was a Third Team All-USA TODAY honoree. She was also named the Gatorade California Player of the year.
