Inez Patterson

The late Inez Robie Patterson is rated by sports experts as probably the most versatile woman athlete in the history of Pennsylvania. She entered Temple University in 1929. At Temple, she made the highest average in athletics in a class of 67 women. She made the All-Collegiate hockey team for four straight years. She also made All-Collegiate teams in tennis, basketball, track, volleyball and dancing. She was graduated from Temple in 1934. She attended West Philadelphia High School. During her athletic career there, she was the class manager, only Black girl hockey player and set a new record for the round-arm basketball throw of 93 feet. Following her graduation from Temple, she participated in many local and national championship events. She devoted much of her time to training girls in recreation and physical education at Southwest Belmont YWCA, Orange, Newark, Montclair, Jersey City and New York City's YWCA's. In 1938, she was appointed National Program Director of the American Tennis Association.
