No. 20 Baylor tops Temple in first round NCAA Volleyball Action

Bears advance to second round after 3-1 win
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (December 6) -- The No. 20 Baylor women's volleyball team beat Temple 3-1 Friday night in the first round of the
1999 NCAA Tournament at Penn State. The Bears will face the winner of the Penn State-Robert Morris match in second-round
action at 7:30 Saturday night at Rec Hall.
Temple finished its season with a 25-6 record while Baylor improved to 26-8. The Owls lost their third consecutive first round
NCAA match as the Bears won their first ever NCAA Tournament game.
After dropping the first game 15-11, Baylor won game two with a hard fought 16-14 win, fighting off a game point at 14-13 in the
process. The Bears got off to a quick 6-1 start in game three and cruised to a 15-7 win. In game four, Baylor fought off a 10-6
deficit before coming back with a 15-12 win to close out the match.
"A couple of good performances by a couple of seniors helped us pull this one out," Baylor coach Brian Hosfeld said. "We've
been in a lot of tight spots this season, so we were prepared for a match like this."
With 100 team assists, Baylor tied an NCAA record for assists in a four game match. Setter Dana Chuha finished with 94 assists,
one shy of the NCAA's individual record. Elisha Polk led Baylor with 32 kills and 24 digs and Kla Young added 27 kills and 17
digs.
Leading the way for Temple was Enkeleida Shkoza, who had 27 kills while hitting .423. Alma Kovaci had 24 kills and Solana
Lee had 54 assists.
"I'm real proud of the way the girls played," Temple coach Bob Bertucci said about his team. "I thought our effort was very good.
Baylor's a good team."
