(Apr. 29, 1999) -- Temple University men's varsity heavyweight eight crew, under the direction of 20-year head coach Dr. Gavin White Jr., is ranked No. 10 in the USRowing National Collegiate Rowing Coaches Poll.
The men's varsity heavyweight eight has captured three straight regatta titles this spring season. The Owls won the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic (5:40.94) held on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. on April 10 before rowing to victory in the Murphy Cup (5:58.59) on Philadelphia's Schuylkill River, April 17. Last weekend (April 25), Temple posted its third straight first place finish with a time of 5:33.75 in the Georgetown Invitational Regatta for BIG EAST schools, held on the Potomac.
The Temple men's varsity heavyweight eight boat consists of senior coxswain Reade Palmer (Dublin, Ga./Winter Park HS), sophomore Rodney Bierhuizen (Ontario, Canada/Denis Moris HS), sophomore Sean Casey (Kerry, Ireland/St. Brendan's College), senior Brendan Duke (Carlow, Ireland/Presentation Collegiate), senior Igor Francetic (Zagreb, Croatia/10 Gimnazija), senior Peter Gergo (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner HS), senior Brendan Marzano (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), junior Jason Read (Ringoes, N.J./Hun School) and senior Nathan Swick (Ontario, Canada/Holy Cross HS).
The Owls resume their season next weekend (May 7-8) on the Schuylkill River in the world's largest collegiate regatta, the Dad Vail Regatta. The men's varsity heavyweight eight has won 15 of the last 16 Dad Vail finals, including 10 straight.
