7.27.99 | Men's Crew

(July 27, 1999) -- Temple University oarsmen Reade Palmer (Dublin, Ga./Winter Park HS) and Jason Read (Ringoes, N.J./Hun School) helped lead the United States National 23-Under Crew to a Nation's Cup Regatta victory (7/25) in Hamburg, Germany.

With Palmer as the coxswain and Read at the stroke position, the United States beat second place Germany (5:30.13) by open water with a time of 5:26.96 to capture gold in the heavyweight eight final. Russia placed third with a time of 5:32.57.

Palmer completed his collegiate eligibility as a four-time Dad Vail Regatta gold medalist at Temple this past spring. Read, a member of the 1998 U.S. 23-Under Crew that earned Nation's Cup silver, enters his senior season this fall.

The U.S. 23-Under Crew returns to the waters for the Pan-American games, to be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba this Friday, July 30. The nine-member crew, comprised of student-athletes from across America, then participates in the World Championship Regatta held in St. Catherines, Ontario on August 29. Temple men's crew coach Dr. Gavin R. White will be among the coaches directing the crew during its Canadian tour.
