Best is Best as Owls Record Fifth Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA - The match record now stands at 18-8, 13-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference for the Temple volleyball team after defeating Rhode Island three games to one in a match at McGonigle Hall. The game scores were 9-15, 15-6, 15-4 and 15-8 for the Owls who won their fifth match in a row and have won 15 of their last 17.
Temple stumbled out of the gate and dropped game one 15-9 before recovering to take the final three games of the match. The Owls were led by senior outside hitter, Brandy Best with 13 kills and six digs. Senior sensation Alma Kovaci, All-America candidate and reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year added 11 kills and 14 digs. Setting things up for the home team was senior Teresa Schumacher with 37 assists. During the contest, senior outside hitter, Maria Vutskova (eight kills) recorded her 1,000th kill.
Rhode Island was led by Yolanda Bogacz with a match-high 15 kills. Cheri Melson (10 kills, 20 digs) was the only Ram to post double figure kill numbers. Setter Britta Feldmann posted a match-high 44 assists for the visitors in the loss.
Next up for the Owls, the final home match of the season against Massachusets (November 11 at 4:00 p.m. McGonigle) as Temple celebrates Senior Day. Kovaci, Vutskova, Best and Schumacher will be honored. Among their collective accomplishments, three straight Atlantic 10 Championships.
