Washington, D.C. (September 20) - The three-time defending Atlantic 10 champion Temple Owls opened conference play in dramatic fashion with a five game marathon win over the George Washington Colonials three games to two. The win ends Temple's four game losing streak and raises the Owls' match record to 4-6 (1-0 in the Atlantic 10). The game scores were 10-15, 15-9, 14-16, 15-8 and 15-3 in a match that took two hours and 29 minutes to complete.
Playing its seventh away match in a row and its first game on the East Coast in over a fortnight, Temple used someone old and someone new to beat the team in blue. The "someone old" in the Owls' attack was senior All-America candidate and reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, Alma Kovaci, who boomed 35 kills and 24 digs in the match. The "someone new" was freshman, Yamit Haba who posted 23 kills and 15 digs, her highest totals of the season.
George Washington, was led by Tracee Brown (19 kills) and Julie Jahnke (17 kills) with Suzana Manole nearly notching a triple double (13 kills, 22 digs and eight blocks). The match marked the first time Temple was extended to five games this season.
Next up for the Owls is another road match at Duquesne on Saturday, September 23. Temple then returns home to face Dayton (Friday, September 29) and Xavier (Saturday, September 24).
