Cucinotta On 2001 Rotary Smith Watch List

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 31) - Temple first baseman Rob Cucinotta has been placed on the

2001 Rotary Smith Watch List. The Rotary Smith Award is given annually to the

best player in Division I baseball.

Cucinotta, a junior from Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, is coming off an outstanding sophomore season when he led the Owls in seven offensive categories. Last season, Cucinotta hit .379, with nine home runs, 43 RBIs, 40 runs scored, 66 hits, a .609 slugging percentage, and a remarkable .500 on base percentage in 52 games. Cucinotta was also solid defensively making only nine errors in 417 chances at first base.

There are 160 nominees for the award that will be presented June 28 in Houston, Texas. Former winners of the Rotary Smith award include Oakland Athletics pitcher Tim Hudson, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Kris Benson, Florida Marlins outfielder Mark Kotsay and Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek.
