PHILADELPHIA— Senior pitcher Matt Hockenberry had his dream come true Friday when the Owl hurler was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the ninth round (262nd pick) of the MLB First-Year Player Draft. The Hanover, Pa. native is the highest Temple player selected since 1990 when Todd Miller was taken with the 195th pick in the seventh round by the Boston Red Sox.
"It is a huge honor to be drafted, and to have it be by the Phillies, a team from the same city I played during my college career makes it extra special," said Hockenberry.
Hockenberry was the ace of the Temple Baseball staff in 2014, posting a 5-6 record with team-highs in wins, innings pitched (93.1), games started (14) and strikeouts (71). He compiled a 3.18 earned run average, tops among Temple starters, in his final campaign.
During his career, he posted a 13-17 won-loss record, starting 46 games and striking out 209 batters over 280.2 innings.
He was recently named Under Armour OwlSports.com Athlete of the Month for May. During the month he had 1-2 record with a 1.86 ERA in four games with the win coming in an upset of then #16 Houston. He also tossed a complete game against then #5 Louisville, striking out 10 Cardinals while allowing just two runs.
Hockenberry earned Philadelphia Big 5 Pitcher of the Week honors twice in May and was named to the All-Big 5 team.
