Frank D'Agostino's Two Home Runs Propel Temple to a 9-4 Win Over UConn in Final Game

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Temple baseball defeated No. 7 seed UConn, 9-4, in the final game of pool play in the American Conference Tournament at Bright House Field on Saturday afternoon. The Owls finish the season with a 15-32 record.
After UConn scored two runs off starter Ryan Kuehn in the first inning, the Owls tied the game up in the second. Frank D'Agostino doubled to right center to lead off the inning. With two outs, Reyn Sugai doubled to right field to knock in D'Agostino. Sugai reached home on a single to center field by Jimmy Kerrigan.
Frank D'Agostino gave the Owls a lead the next inning with a solo home run to right field. The home run was D'Agostino's first of the season.
The bats really came alive in the fourth inning for Temple as they scored six runs off six hits. Sugai singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch to start the inning. Derek Peterson knocked in Sugai with a single to left field. Peterson then scored on a single to left field by Daniel Dragos, and Dragos advanced to third on a fielding error in the outfield. Rob Amaro had a RBI single to center field to allow Dragos to jog in home. After Andrew Nist reached on an error at shortstop, D'Agostino hit another home run to right field to give Temple a seven-run lead.
Starter Ryan Kuehn (4-2) pitched five innings for the win in the final game of his career. Kuehn gave up only one earned run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Seniors Preston Hill and Phil Gianakos each threw an inning of relief. Hill pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout while Gianakos allowed one run in the seventh inning with one strikeout. Zach Batchelor threw the final two innings of the game, striking out one batter while allowing two hits.
Kerrigan, Peterson and D'Agostino each had three hits in the game to tie career-highs while Sugai led the Owls with four to set his career-high in hits. D'Agostino also had a double to go along with his four RBI from two home runs.
Temple outhit UConn, 17-7, in the game, and five different Owls had RBIs. The 17 hits was one less than the season-high set in a 15-8 win over Rider in the season-opener on Feb. 22nd.
The game was the final game in the 87-year history of the Temple baseball program.
