2.11.01 | Baseball
Skip Wilson's squad opened the 2001 baseball season down in New Orleans
with a three-game set against the Tulane Green Wave. After losing the first
two games of the series by a combined score of 30-3, the Owls rallied in the
final game from a six run deficit, only to lose in the bottom of the ninth,
7-6.
GAME # 1 - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2001
The Owls suffered a 12-2 loss at the hands of the Tulane Green Wave at
Turchin Stadium. It was the fifth straight victory for Tulane while the Owls
dropped their 2001 opener.
An eight-run fourth inning put the Green Wave up, 9-2, and the Owls failed
to cross home plate from then on. Senior Jeff Rugg (0-1), suffered the loss,
while Beau Richardson (1-0) won for the first time in the young season.
Owls third baseman, Sam Sabolchick, had three of the Owls seven hits while
three different Tulane players had two hits each.
The Owls were without their leading hitter from last year, Junior first
baseman and 2001 Smith Rotary Award nominee Robert Cucinotta, who suffered an
injury to his knee which will sideline him for about 2-3 weeks.
The game was picked up in the bottom of the first on Saturday, as heavy
rain caused cancellation on Friday night.

GAME # 3 - FEBRUARY 11, 2001
The Temple Owls battled back from an early six run deficit, only to see
the Tulane Green Wave push across a run in the bottom of the ninth to sweep
the three-game series, 7-6.
Owls hurler, Alan Birnbrauer, entered the fourth inning with the Owls
trailing, 6-0, and after allowing a hit to the first batter he faced,
Birnbrauer retired the next 15 batters, giving theOwls an opportunity to
rally.
The Owls tied the game in the eighth on a ground out by catcher, Jeff
Roma, but the Green Wave pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the
ninth. A pinch-hit single started the rally and two perfectly placed
sacrifice bunts turned into infield hits, loading the bases with no outs. A
hit batter won the game for Tulane, who are now 6-0. The Owls, who travel to
Williamsburg, Virginia next weekend, are now 0-3.
