Eight Fencers Reach Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championship Finals

Philadelphia, PA - The Temple University Women's Fencing Team had one of its
most successful Regional Championships in recent team history on Saturday,
March 10th at Drew University. Based on their 2000-2001 Season Record, all
thirteen team members earned a Regional selection. Competing against the
strongest fencers from the Mid-Atlantic and South regions, Temple placed eight
fencers in the individual finals. The Regional Championships play a major
role in NCAA selection. In each of the three weapons (epee, foil, and sabre)
the Mid-Atlantic South will only select 7 women to compete in the NCAA
Championships at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside later this month.
In the Epee Competition, junior Julia Korony placed 5th, while freshman Sara
Forsythe placed 9th and freshman Stephanie Sargent placed 11th , in the 12
field final. In addition, freshman Krissy Hachtmann placed 20th.
In Foil, Temple also had three finalists. Senior Gina DeIeso finished 6th,
while junior Stephanie Izzolino was 9th and senior Jaime Beecher placed 12th.
The remaining Temple foilists, Nerita Brumell and Maggie Castellano finished
20th and 22nd respectively.
In the Sabre Competition, sophomore Sakinah Shaahid placed 8th while freshman
Aziza Hassan finished in 9th place. In addition, sophomore Nicole Macomber
was 18th while junior Sara Ironman finished in 20th place.
The coaches were very pleased with the team's results and now are anxiously
awaiting the NCAA Tournament selections, which will be made on Thursday.
