Baseball Owls Open A-10 Schedule With A Bang

Skip Wilson's club (4-14, 3-0) got off to a record setting start in

Atlantic 10 play by sweeping a 3-game series at Erny Field against Xavier

(7-17, 0-3), including a record setting performance in the opening game of the

series.

Here's the results of the 3-game series:

GAME # 17 - MARCH 24, 2001 vs. XAVIER

The Temple Owls (2-15, 1-0) opened their Atlantic 10 schedule with a 29-12

thrashing of the Xavier Musketeers (7-15, 0-1) in the first game of a

scheduled doubleheader. The 29 runs scored by the Owls tied a record for most

runs scored in a game. Temple beat Osteophathy by a score of 29-3 on April 14,

1931 and Hofstra by a score of 29-4 in the first game of a doubleheader back

on April 21, 1982.

Senior Joe Lyall drove in six runs to lead the Owls, while five others

drove in three runs each. The Owls scored at least three runs in every inning

but the third, when they were held scoreless. Kyle Sweppenhiser and Rob

Cucinotta each had three hits for the winners.

Senior Jeff Rugg (2-2) picked up his second win of the season and the week,

while Greg Wiggers (2-3) suffered the loss for Xavier.

GAME # 18 - MARCH 24, 2001 vs. XAVIER

Skip Wilson's club (3-15, 2-0) broke open a close game scoring eleven runs

in the final two innings to sweep a doubleheader with Xavier (7-16, 0-2) by a

score of 16-2.

Alan Birnbrauer (1-3) went the distance to record his first win of the

season. The Villanova transfer also recorded his first win in a Temple Owl

uniform limiting Xavier to just six hits.

The Owls peppered Xavier pitchers for five home runs, led by second baseman

Jim Tully, who had two. Chris Krusen, Rob Cucinotta and Mike Jenkins each

added one. Joe Lyall, who had six runs batted in the first game of the

doubleheader, knocked in four more in the second game, giving him a total of

ten for the two games. Krusen and Tully added three runs batted in each for

the victorious Owls, who have now won two straight for the first time this

season.

GAME # 19 - MARCH 25, 2001 vs. XAVIER

Temple (4-15, 3-0) got a complete game performance from senior Greg Powell

and two home runs by junior Rob Cucinotta in completing a three-game sweep of

Xavier (7-17, 0-3) at Erny Field by a score of 4-1.

Powell (1-4) limited the Musketeers to just five hits and one unearned run

in picking up his first win of the season.

All the Owls runs came via the home run. Rob Cucinotta had a solo and

two-run homer, while Mike Jenkins also added a solo homer.

The Owls 3-0 mark finds them atop the eastern division of the Atlantic 10

conference.
