3.30.01 | Baseball
GAME # 21 - MARCH 29, 2001 vs. PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
Skip Wilson's Temple Owls (6-15-0, 3-0) used a strong pitching effort from
junior Brandon Bruno and a four-run fourth inning to propel the Owls to their
fifth straight win in defeating Philadelphia University (5-13-1, 3-2) 5-0, in
a rain-shortened game at Erny Field.
The Owls bunched together five hits in the fourth inning to break open a
scoreless game. Bob Filler doubled in two runs and Jim Tully followed with a
single to plate two others giving Bruno (1-1) his first victory of the year.
The lefty allowed just one single, but after loading the bases in the fifth,
senior Greg Powell came in to put out the fire by striking out Dan Schmincke
and getting Nick McGonigle on a roller to first to record his first save of
the season.
Senior Bob Filler, who had two hits on four plate appearances, is just ten
official at-bats away from breaking the schools career at-bats record, set by
Tom Whalen in 1996. He is also just nine games away for most career games
played and just three hits shy of 200 career hits.
