GAME # 30 - APRIL 10, 2001 @ DELAWARE
Skip Wilson's Temple Owls saw a 3-0 lead evaporate as the University of
Delaware scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to hand the
visitors their fourth consecutive defeat, 5-4.
The Owls (10-20, 5-1) bunched three single runs in the first, third and
fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead but Delaware (19-8, 6-2) took advantage of
two costly errors erupting for four runs in the fifth on just one hit.
Junior Brian Ursone was cruising along with a no-hitter until John
Schneider homered to lead off the fifth. Then, a routine fly to right was
mishandled by Joe Lyall opening the floodgates. Lyall looked like he had
possession as he brought the glove down to exchange the ball into his
throwing hand, but the umpire ruled otherwise. Two walks, a wild pitch and an
infield error later, and the Blue Hens would take a 4-3 lead.
The Owls tied it in the seventh as an errant pickoff throw to first
resulted in Jeff Roma coming all the way around to tie the score.
Delaware would plate the eventual winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Reliever and loser, Mike Caron (2-4), walked Pete Maestrale and then wild
pitched him to second. With two outs, Jeff Rugg replaced Caron to face
left-handed hitter, Vince Vukovich, but with two strikes, the designated
hitter singled to left field to score the go-ahead run.
The Owls three times ran themselves out of innings, including two runners
nailed at the plate in the fourth and eighth innings on attempted
double-steals.
For the Owls, Jeff Roma had three hits and centerfielder Bob Filler broke
Bob Christy's mark of 187 games played in a Temple uniform. Christy played
for the Owls from 1987-90.
