8.17.01 | Baseball

Former Temple pitcher and pitching coach, Joe Kerrigan, was named manager

of the Boston Red Sox following the firing of skipper Jimy Williams

yesterday (August 16th).

Kerrigan, recognized as one of the best pitching coaches in the major

leagues, agreed to a two-year contract with the struggling Sox.

"We have 43 games left," said Kerrigan who was elevated to a position that

he has never held before. "Our goal is to get into the playoffs. That's all

we're concerned about."

Kerrigan and the Red Sox got off on the right foot in his first managerial

game. Dante Bichette's three-run eighth-inning homer propelled Boston to a

6-4 win over the Seatttle Mariners at Fenway Park last night.
