OWLS VOLLEYBALL WINS FIRST EVER NCAA TOURNAMENT MATCH WITH 3-1 WIN OVER MANHATTAN COLLEGE

The Owls had four players in double digit scoring including outside hitter Xu Yun with 24 kills and seven digs and outside hitter Yamit Haba with 13 kills and 17 digs. Fellow outside hitter Liu Shu had a career night with 19 kills and eight digs while middle blocker Charity Hill contributed 11 kills and three digs. Setter Alison Runk had 67 assists and three service aces.
Game one started out with the two teams matching each other point for point. The Owls took a 20-17 lead after a kill by Haba and two errors by the Jaspers. Manhattan came back and scored four straight and took the lead 21-20. The two teams tied each other point for point from the 28 mark on before the Jaspers had a kill and a service ace to win game one 32-30.
The Owls came back with a vengeance in games two and three dominating play and out-hitting the Jaspers .333 to .097 in game two and .400 to .000 in game four. Runk had 19 assists between the two games while outside hitter Xu had 14 kills.
Temple held the lead for most of game four but the Jaspers did manage to tie the game at 20-20. The Owls took the lead again on a kill by Haba and another ace by Runk but Manhattan tied the game again 28-28 on two net errors by the Owls. Temple's Xu went on to score the final four kills to help the Owls win game four 33-31.
The Cherry and White will face No. 13 Penn State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow night, December 7, 2002. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
