OWLS FENCING FALLS TO #1 ST. JOHN'S AND #3 PENN STATE, DEFEAT CORNELL, COLUMBIA

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple University women's fencing team (18-5) fell to #1 St. John's 8-19 and #3 Penn State 8-19 in Hutch Gymnasium at the University of Pennsylvania fencing meet this past weekend, February 23. The Cherry and White went on to defeat Cornell University 22-5 and Columbia 17-10.

Sophomore Sakinah Shaahid led the way for the Owls, winning all 11 of her bouts and improving her season record to 43-5. Senior Sara Ironman picked up wins against Cornell and Columbia while improving her record to 31-19. Sophomore Aziza Hassan and freshman Amanda Gerwer rounded out the Sabre squad with 4-6 and 4-7 records respectively.

Sophomore Sara Forsythe who compiled an 8-2 record with wins against Cornell, Penn State and Columbia led the Epee squad. Senior Julia Korony added a 6-5 match record and improved her overall season record to 38-14. Freshman Kera Luckhardt and sophomore Stephanie Sargent rounded out the Epee squad with 1-0 and 2-9 record respectively.

Freshman Jeanne Browne led the foil squad posting a perfect 5-0 match record. Senior Stefanie Izzolino compiled a 5-6 record and improved her overall season record to 29-12. Sophomore Nerita Brumell (3-7) and freshmen Katrina Najm (0-4) and Nnenna Okoro (1-3) rounded out the foil squad.

Next up for the Owls is the NIWFA Championships next weekend, March 2-3 in Pearson Hall on Temple's main campus.
