OWLS COMPETE AT THE NCAA MID-ATLANTIC SOUTH REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

PHILADELPHIA -- Not to be outdone by Temple women's basketball, the Temple University women's fencing team (18-5) is also advancing to postseason play. At the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships this past weekend (March 9) the Owls had two fencers advance to the regional finals in each individual weapon.

In foil, the two finalists were senior Stefanie Izzolino who placed fifth and freshman Jeanne Browne who placed tenth. Rounding out the foil squad was freshman Nnenna Okoro who finished 19, Katrina Najm placing 18 and Nerita Brumell finishing 21.

Sophomores Sakinah Shaahid and Aziza Hassan were the sabre finalists placing sixth and eighth respectively. Senior Sara Iroman and junior Nicole Macomber tied for 15 while freshman Amanda Gerwer placed 21 overall.

Senior Julia Korony advanced to the finals where she placed eighth while sophomore Sara Forsythe finished in the 11 spot. Sophomore Stephanie Sargent and freshman Kera Luckhardt round out the epee squad with 21 and 25 place finishes respectively.

The National Selection Committee will make their final decisions on which fencers will compete in the NCAA National Fencing tournament this week, March 14, 2002 where two fencers in each weapon will be allowed to represent their school.
