OWLS DROP 13-7 DECISION TO SIENA
3.10.02 | Baseball
The Saints (1-12) benefitted by two hit batters by Owl starter Brian Ursone to score two quick runs in the first inning. They added single runs in the second and third before the Owls could get on the scoreboard in the home third. Catcher Mike Brown singled and after advancing to second on a groundout, scored on a single by infielder Jim Tully.
Siena, which scored runs in the first six frames, added two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and plated five runs in the sixth to take a commanding 12-2 lead. The Saints got to Owl starter Brian Ursone for three runs in three innings and then roughed up freshman Matt Mondok for eight runs, six of which were earned in 2.2 innings of relief. Another freshman, Justin Mendek, came in to settle things down, allowing just one run in 3.1 innings of relief.
The Owls lone explosion occured in the home sixth when they scored four runs. John Quigley led off the inning with a single to left center. Mike Weckenman drew a walk and Pete Colon, batting for Mike Brown, also walked. Quigley scored on a wild pitch and following a Joe Lyall fly out, Tully drove in two runs with a single down the rightfield line. Sam Sabolchick followed with a single to leftcenter and Al Roach capped the uprising with a single up the middle scoring Tully. The Owls had the bases loaded but Josh Courage struck out Quigley to end the threat.
For the Owls who continued to pepper the ball, left fielder Al Roach had three hits and two runs batted in while Lyall, Tully and Sabolchick each added two hits apiece.
Brian Ursone (0-1) took the loss for the Owls while Mark Sanborn (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for Siena.
The Owls take on Central Florida later this afternoon.
