3.16.02 | Baseball
The Owls (2-6) led 2-0 going into the bottom of the eighth, but a six-run inning clinched the victory.
Junior Alan Birnbrauer (1-0) pitched six strong innings, allowing just four hits while striking out three in picking up his first win of the season. Freshman Bryan Stamm pitched the last three innings while allowing just one base hit.
Stamm picked up his first save of the year while getting the Owls out of a bases loaded, no out situation in the seventh.
After a walk and hit batter by Birnbrauer opened the seventh, Stamm came on in relief. Mike Goldblatt single loading the bases with nobody out. However, Stamm got pinch-hitter Jon Slaughter on a bouncer back to the mound and turned it into a double-play, pitcher to catchaer to first base. Evan Sobel popped to short to end the threat.
The Owls busted the game open in the bottom of the eighth. A double by freshman Mike Weckenman scored one run and three batters later second baseman Fred Hilliard cleared the bases with a three-run double. Sam Sabolchick and Pere Colon's RBI singles rounded out the scoring.
The Owls finish up their Florida trip on Saturday when they play Rhode Island at Rollins College beginning at 12 Noon.
