Skip Wilson's Temple baseball club opened defense of the 2001 Atlantic 10 Championship by winning the first game of a doubleheader, 16-15, winning in dramatic fashion. Trailing 15-7 going in the last frame, the Owls scored nine runs as Joe Lyall hit a dramatic two-out three-run homer to lift the defending champion to a victory in their 2002 home opener. The fans who braved the chilly weather at Erny Field were given a treat as the Owls also one the second game of the doubleheader as Mike Caron threw a nifty six-hitter to complete the sweep. The Owls were led by catcher Jeff Roma on the offensive end in the second game. Roma, who caught both games, went 3-for-3 in the nightcap including a homerun. He also scored two runs.Freshman Jason Connor had two hits for the Owls while John Quigley also homered for the Owls.
In the first game, the Owls were also helped along with first baseman, Sam Sabolchick, who hit two three-run homers while driving in a career-high seven runs.
Brandon Bruno, who suffered three losses on the spring trip down in Florida, got the win. Bruno held the Dukes down after coming in with the Owls trailing 12-3. He pitched a solid 4.2 innings while giving up three runs on just three hits.
The two teams meet tomorrow at Erny Field in the get-away game beginning at 12 Noon.
