DUQUESNE HANDS OWLS FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS OF THE SEASON WINNING THE GET-AWAY GAME, 9-3 AT ERNY FIELD

3.24.02 | Baseball

The Duquesne Dukes (8-9, 1-2) handed the Temple Owls (4-8, 2-1) their first conference loss of the season, winning the get-away game 9-3, behind the hitting of Gary Lee and the solid relief pitching performance by Bob Reifschneider.

The Owls jumped in front by scoring a pair of runs in the opening inning on just one hit. The designated hitter, Keith Ramsey, walked and was doubled home by leftfielder Al Roach, who later scored on a passed ball.

Temple starter Brian Ursone pitched a scoreless two innings before being tagged for a two-run homer off the bat of third baseman Pete Maropis.

Both teams plated a run in the sixth to keep the game tied. Sean Wilson's single put the Dukes up 3-2 but the Owls responded by tying the game in the bottom frame on a perfectly executed double-steal.

The game remained tied until the eighth when Dquuesne plated two runs. Owls reliever, Alan Birnbrauer (1-1) was greeted by a leaoff triple by Gary Lee, who had three hits on the afternoon. Skip Wilson then summoned freshman Bryan Stamm into the game and he was greeted by a two-run home run by Jonathan Kelly. Stamm got out of a first and third two-out jam by enticing Maropis to ground out to short.

Duquesne sealed their first conference win by scoring four in the ninth. Poor fielding by the Owls contributed to the Dukes final two runs.

Bob Reifschneider (2-1) got the win for the Dukes pitching four hitless innings in relief. The Owls were held to just four hits on the afternoon.

Up next for the Owls is a Liberty Bell Classic matchup with Lehigh at Veterans Stadium on Wednesday, March 27th at 3:00 p.m.
