TEMPLE WOMEN'S FENCING TEAM PLACES SEVENTH AT THE NCAA TOURNAMENT; SHAAHID NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL AMERICAN

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple University women's fencing team (18-5) placed seventh amongst women's teams at the NCAA National Fencing Championships this past weekend, March 23 and 24 at Drew University. For the second consecutive year, junior Sakinah Shaahid was Temple's top competitor finishing fourth in sabre and earning First Team All-American honors.

In the final two bouts of the sabre competition, Shaahid lost two close bouts to eventual sabre champion Sada Jacobson, 15-13, and bronze medallist Julia Gelman of St. John's, 15-14. Sophomore Aziza Hassan finished 15th overall, winning nine of her bouts.

In the final competition of her collegiate fencing career, senior Stefanie Izzolino placed 17th after winning nine of her 23 bouts. Freshman Jeanne Browne placed 24th overall. The lone Owl competing in epee, sophomore Sara Forsythe, finished 15th winning 10 of her 17 bouts.
