BASEBALL TEAM BEATS LEHIGH 10-6, ADVANCES IN LIBERTY BELL CLASSIC

3.28.02 | Baseball

Behind a strong hitting performance by freshman infielder Fred Hilliard and senior first-baseman Sam Sabolchick, the Temple baseball team defeated Lehigh, 10-6, in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic at Veterans Stadium on Wednesday.

The victory advances the Owls (5-8) into the semifinal round of the single-elimination competition. In that game, Temple will meet Philadelphia Big 5 and Atlantic 10 Conference-rival Saint Joseph's on Tuesday (Apr. 2) at 7:00 p.m. Should the Owls win that game, they would play in the championship final against the winner of Tuesday's 3 p.m. match between Delaware and Drexel the following evening. All tournament games will be played at Veterans Stadium.

In the win over Lehigh, Hilliard went 3-for-4 including a triple and an RBI, while Sabolchick clouted his third home run of the season, added a double and knocked in two runs. Senior pitcher Matt Powell (2-1) scattered two hits over four innings to earn the victory.

The Owls will host a non-conference game vs. Lemoyne at Erny Field on Thursday, before departing for a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at Xavier on Saturday and Sunday. Temple heads into the weekend set with a 2-1conference record.
