3.29.02 | Baseball
The Owls got off to a good start as rightfielder Joe Lyall, who had four hits on the afternoon, tripled in Fred Hilliard in the home first and Sam Sabolchick followed with a double that plated Lyall. The Owls scored a run in the second while Le Moyne plated single runs in the second, third and fourth to keep the game close. The run in the fourth chased Owl starting pitcher, freshman Justin Mendek and head coach Ship Wilson went to the bullpen and brought in another freshman, Bryan Stamm.
The Owls broke the game open with back-to-back five run sixth and seventh innings. Once again the big hit in the sixth came off the bat of Lyall who singled in two runs off reliever, Shane Burke. Two other runs came in off back-to-back bases loaded walks as the Owls took a 9-3 lead into the seventh inning.
Le Moyne scored a run in the top of the seventh but the Owls broke the game open in the home seventh with five runs. A Gene Burpoe single scored one run and three runs crossed the plate on a two-run single by Mike Weckenman and an error that allowed a third run to score.
Freshman Bryan Stamm (1-2) picked up his first collegiate victory with some help from Brian Ursone out of the bullpen.
The Owls travel to Cincinnati this weekend to take on Atlantic 10 Conference Xavier in a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
