3.30.02 | Baseball

The Temple Owls (6-10, 2-3) lost a doubleheader out at Xavier, losing the first game 14-5 and dropping the nightcap, 5-4 on an extra inning home run by junior Kevin McKnight.

Xavier (12-12, 5-0) pounded out 14 hits in the opener led by freshmen Brett Smith and Jay Johnson who had three hits each. Smith homered in the contest while Johnson also scored three runs. The Owls were led by senior rightfielder Joe Lyall who continues to crush the ball. Lyall went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Second baseman Fred Hilliard went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Starter Matt Powell (2-2) took the loss in the opener.

Xavier took an early 3-0 lead after two innings of the second game but the Owls scored two runs in the third and fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Owl starter Mike Caron settled down and blanked the Musketeers over the next three innings but gave up a tying sixth inning home run to Smith. Xavier then won the game in the bottom of the eighth off Caron (1-1) when McKnight hit the first pitch off the wall to give the Musketeers a sweep of the doubleheader. Fred Hilliard went 3-for-4 with a pair of singles, a double and RBI for the Owls while Lyall had a single and RBI.

Xavier got complete game wins from first game starter Adam Jahnsen, who won his fifth game of the season, and Jarrett Sues who pitched the full eight innings, allowing eight hits while striking out six.

The two teams meet again on Sunday in the get-away game of the thre-game series. The first pitch is slated for 12 Noon.
