OWLS SWEPT AT XAVIER, LOSE GET-AWAY GAME, 15-4

The Temple Owls (6-11, 2-4) pitching staff was roughed up for 15 runs on 21 hits as the Xavier Musketeers (13-12, 6-11) swept a three-game series, winning the get-away game, 15-4. Starter Alan Birnbrauer (1-2) never got out of the first inning, giving up four runs on five hits with the big blow coming off the bat of catcher Eric Armstrong. With two runs in already, Armstrong belted a two-out two-run homer to stake the Musketeers to a 4-0 lead after one inning. Reliever Brian Ursone was roughed up for seven runs, although only four were earned, in an inning and two-thirds as the Owls could never recover from the onslaught.

Freshmen Justin Mendek and Chris Hamilton pitched well in relief as the Owls dropped to 2-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings.

The Owls bats musturded little in the way of offense, scoring two runs in the fourth and single runs in the last two frames.

The Owls come back to Philadelphia and take on Saint Joseph's down at Veterans Stadium on Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals of he 2002 Liberty Bell Classic. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
