Skip Wilson's ballclub immediately set their thoughts on this weekend's key Atlantic 10 eastern division three-game series up at St. Bonaventure. The Owls, 5-4 in conference play, trail the Bonnies (5-3) by one-half game in the standings.
The Owls opened up the scoring against Rider in the visitors first. After two were out, center fielder John Quigley (Bensalem, Pa/Bensalem) kept his hot bat going, tripling to left center. He scored on an RBI single by Sam Sabolchick (Medford, NJ/Shawnn).
The Broncs got two back in the home first. Following back-to-back singles, starter and eventual loser Alan Birbrauer (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic), retired the next two batters but Scott Rich, who had four hits on the afternoon, tripled to left center scoring two runs.
The Owls tied the game in the third. Catcher Mike Brown (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) led off the inning with a bloop double to right center. Following a sacrifice bunt by Quigley, Joe Lyall (Levittown, PA/Harry Truman) doubled to left center scoring Brown. Lyall was caught between second and third for second out of the inning.
Rider went back in front in the fourth. Carl Loadenthal tripled in a run and scored on an overthrow giving the Broncs a 4-2 lead.
The Broncs extended that lead in the sixth scoring a pair of runs. Facing reliever Harley Nagar (Harrisburg, Pa/Susquehanna), Loadenthal started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Following a strikeout, Jonathan Rehm singled in a run and a triple plated Rehm with the second run of the inning giving the Broncs a 6-2 lead.
Meanwhile, Rider starter Ken Pearce silenced the Owl bats from the fourth ininng through the seventh before the Owls scored again in the eighth. Fred Hilliard (Upper Darby, Upper Darby) singled with one out and scored on a two-out double by Quigley. Pearce was then replaced by Brandon Leslie who retired Sam Sabolchick (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) on a groundout to second ending the Owls threat.
Temple would add a run in the ninth as Jerome Lopez tripled (Laureldale, Pa/Muhlenberg) to left center scoring Keith Ramsey (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional), who reached base all four times with two singles and two walks.
The Owls now set their sights on the upcoming three-game series up in Olean, New York this weekend against St. Bonaventure. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at 12 Noon with the get-away game also scheduled for 12 Noon on Sunday.
