BONNIES DEFEAT OWLS, 4-1, SECOND GAME RAINED OUT

4.14.02 | Baseball

Kyle Johnson (3-1) showed why he was the Atlantic 10 Conference Pitcher of the Year last year as he hurled a complete game three-hitter against the Temple Owls (11-15, 5-5). Johnson walked just two while striking out six. The crafty righthander also did not allow a Temple leadoff hitter on base in any of the seven innings.

Brandon Bruno (2-4) pitched well in a losing effort. Bruno was tagged for single runs in the second and then from the fourth through the sixth. The Bonnies took the lead in the second on a Kevin Ryan double and a single by Mike Rapacioli.

The Bonnies scored a run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead while pitcher, Kyle Johnson was perfect through the first four innings. The Owls then scored a run in the fifth. With one out, catcher Jeff Roma (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) and designated hitter Al Roach (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled. After a popout, freshman Mike Weckenman (Newtown, Pa/Council Rock) singled in Roma with Roach stopping at third. Johnson got out of the jam by seducing Jerome Lopez (Laureldale, Pa/Muhlenberg) to ground out to third.

St. Bonaventure got a run in the fifth and sixth and took a 4-1 lead into the last frame where the Owls mounted a threat but did not score.

With one out, Roma was hit by a pitch and Roach walked. Following a pair of substitutions on the base paths, a wild pitch moved Temple runners to second and third. Keith Ramsey (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) then walked to load the bases but John escaped any damage, striking out Weckenman and getting pinch hitter Spencer Witte (Nyack, NY/Nyack) to ground out to end the game.

The second game of the doubleheader was rained out and will be played as part of a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 11:00 am.
