OWLS BOW IN 2002 LBC FINAL TO DELAWARE, 17-6

4.16.02 | Baseball

The University of Delaware (20-14) took advantage of a tired Temple Owl baseball team (11-17) just returning from an emotional three-game conference trip up to Olean, New York, erupting for eight runs in the first three innings to win their second consecutive Liberty Bell Classic, defeating the Owls, 17-6 at Veterans Stadium on a sunny and warm afternoon.

The Blue Hens jumped on starter and loser Alan Birnbrauer (1-4) for two quick first inning runs and then on reliever Brandon Bruno as Delaware won for the fifth consecutive time. Delaware added nine more runs in the visitors fifth, opening up an insurmountable 17-1 lead. The Owls did come back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Jerome Lopez (Laureldale, Pa/Muhlenberg) singled and advanced to second on a single by freshman Mike Weckenman (Newtown, Pa/Council Rock). Joe Lyall (Levittown, Pa/Harry Truman), the Owls leading hitter, doubled to score Lopez and Sam Sabolchick (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) singled in two runs before a double play got the Blue Hens out of the inning.

For the Owls, leadoff hitter Fred Hilliard (upper Darby, Pa/Upper Darby) had two hits as did senior Keith Ramsey (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) who doubled and homered. Another bright spot for the Owls was sophomore lefthander Harley Nager who came on in the seventh and held the winners scoreless the rest of the way.

The Owls, turn right around and head to play Bucknell in a non-conference matchup tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
