OWLS SUFFER FIRST SHUTOUT OF THE YEAR AT THE HANDS OF JESSE SANTOS AND UMASS

Going into the crucial weekend series against Massachusetts, the Temple Owls had yet to be shut out, but that streak ended in the first of a crucial three-game series, as Jesse Santos threw a nifty two-hitter, as UMass gained a virtual tie for second place in the eastern division of the Atlantic 10 Conference, defeating the Temple Owls 5-0, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader up in Amherst.

Santos was nearly unhittable, as the Owls mustered only two singles, those coming off the bats of seniors Joe Lyall (Levittown, Pa/Harry Truman) and Sam Sabolchick (Hazleton, Pa/Hazleton Area).

Matt Powell (Holland, PA/Council Rock) pitched well in defeat. The junior righthander allowed a run in the first and then shut out the Minutemen until the fifth when the home squad erupted for four runs to put the game away.

Santos picked up his sixth win (6-1) of the season while Powell evened his record at 4-4.
