BRANDON BRUNO PITCHES TWO-HIT SHUTOUT AS OWLS SPLIT WITH UMASS TO MAINTAIN ONE-GAME LEAD IN EASTERN DIVISION OF A-10 CONFERENCE

4.20.02 | Baseball

The Temple Owls (13-19, 6-8) received a much-needed solid pitching effort from senior Brando Bruno (Lansdale, Pa/North Penn) in the way of a two-hit shut out as the Owls gained a split in the second game of a doubleheader to maintain their one-game lead over UMass as the Owls won nightcap of the doubleheader, 6-0.

Bruno (3-4) was just outstanding, allowing just two hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out eight.

The Owls scored twice in the fifth as Al Roach (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) singled and Keith Ramsey (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) walked as a pinch hitter. After a sacrifice bunt by Fred Hilliard (Upper Darby, Pa/ Upper Darby) left the bases loaded, John Quigley (Bensalem, Pa/Bensalem) singled in two runs to give the Owls a much-needed 2-0 lead. In the sixth, the Owls put the game away scoring four runs off starter and loser Keith Doherty (1-4).

Sam Sabolchick (Hazleton, Pa/Hazletoon Area) started the rally with a double to left. Jerome Lopez (Laureldale, Pa/Muhlenberg) singled to short advancing Sabolchick to third. Sabolchick then scored on a wild pitch and after a walk to Al Roach, Fred Hilliard lofted a sacrifice fly to center. The Owls then scored a run on another wild pitch and an RBI infield single by Joe Lyall.

Meanwhile, senior lefthander Brian Bruno once again put the Owls one game up on the Minutemen heading into tomorrow's get-away game at 12:00 Noon.
