CLUTCH RELIEF PITCHING BY BRIAN URSONE GIVES TEMPLE ITS 15th WIN OF THE SEASON
4.23.02 | Baseball
Trailing 1-0 in the second, the Owls quickly erupted for three runs. A one-out walk to designated hitter Keith Ramsey (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) ignited the uprising and Al Roach (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) doubled in Ramsey. Jerome Lopez (Laureldale, PA/Muhlenberg) then deposited loser Mike Lynch's (1-3) pitch over the left field fence to give the Owls a 3-1 lead.
The Dragons came right back to tie it in the visitors third. After loading the bases with one out, starter Bryan Stamm (Mifflenburg, PA/Mifflinburg) struck out Braden Watson and looked like he was going to work his way out of the jam when Ben Sniecinski singled through the left side to drive in two runs to tie the score.
For the second consecutive outing, Stamm pitched well but after surrendering a leadoff double in the sixth, Brandon Bruno (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) came in and retired the side in order without any further damage.
The Owls would then make a winner out of Bruno (4-4) in the home sixth. Sam Sabolchick (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) led off with a walk and following an errant pickoff toss that allowed Sabolchick to move to second, Lopez laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Sabolchick to third beating the throw from Lynch. Al Roach then hit his second double to plate both runners giving the Owls a 5-3 lead. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts, the second by Fred Hilliard (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) squeezed in the third run of the inning.
The Owls and Bruno got into some difficulty in the eighth. With one out, Luke Sundheim singled and was pinch run for by B.J. McFarland. Bruce Boehm then pinch hit and double off Bruno, scoring McFarland. Lane singled giving the Dragons first and third with one out. Brian Ursone (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) then relieved Bruno and got out of the jam by inducing a pop-up that resulted in a fielders choice and fielding a sharp one-hopper back to the mound retiring Ley for the third out.
Drexel did mount a small threat again in the ninth but Ursone worked out of the jam, giving the Owls their third straight win.
The Owls game scheduled this Thursday with Rider has been moved to May 8th so the Owls will take to the field again on Saturday at Erny Field when Fordham comes to town. A doubleheader is scheduled for 12 Noon and a single game on Sunday at Noon.
