OWLS SUFFER DOUBLEHEADER LOSS AT THE HANDS OF THE FORDHAM RAMS

4.27.02 | Baseball

The Fordham Rams (11-31-1, 4-13) played spoilers on Cherry & White Day at Erny Field, sweeping a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference games from the Temple Owls (15-21, 7-10). The Rams won the first game, 5-3, on an incredible game-saving catch by center fielder Bobby Kingsbury and then won the nightcap behind the complete game effort of pitcher John Baco, 7-1.

In the first game, after the Rams went ahead 1-0, the Owls evened the game in the home second. Catcher Jeff Roma (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) singled and was balked to second. Following a groundout that moved Roma to third, Sam Sabolchick (Hazleton, Pa/Hazleton Area) singled to drive in the tying run.

The tie game didn't last long as the Rams put up a three spot in the visitors. Awalk and single by Tim Short got the Rams going and a two-run triple by Jason Conlisk was followed by a single by Tim Boyle to put the Rams up 4-1.

The Owls cut the lead in half in the fourth. Joe Lyall (Levittown, Pa/Harry Truman) singled, stole second and went to third on an errant throw. Lyall then scored on a John Quigley (Bensalem, Pa/Bensalem) single.

The Rams scored a much-needed run in the top of the sixth on a big two-out hit by Kevin Brush to go up 5-3. The Owls then put up a rally that was cut short on an incredible catch by center fielder, Bobby Kingsbury, last year's Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year.

With one out, a Quigley single was followed by another single by Jeff Roma. The Rams then brought in left hander Andrew Paolillo to face left handed hitter, Sam Sabolchick. With the tying runs on base, Sabolchick drove a ball deep into right center where, out of nowhere, Kingsbury made a diving catch at the base of the fence. With the both Owl runners on the move, Kingsbury got to his feet and got the ball back to the infield, easily doubling off the Owl runner to end the threat and the inning.

Shawn Seales came in the bottom of the seventh with one out after a walk and single and retired the final two batters to preserve the victory for Derek Hucke (3-7) while Matt Powell (4-5) was the tough-luck loser.

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Rams jump on top in the first inning and score two runs in each of the third, sixth and seventh innings to sweep the doubleheader. Third baseman Kurt Thomas went three-for-three including three RBI's while Jon Volosin knocked in a pair of runs for the visiting Rams.
