MIKE CARON PITCHES OWLS TO 9-2 VICTORY OVER FORDHAM IN GET-AWAY GAME
4.29.02 | Baseball
Although Caron allowed 11 hits, he was in command from the start and allowed only two runs, those coming on a Bobby Kingsbury two-run home run in the fifth. The homer broke a string of 14 consecutive scoreless innings pitched in A-10 Conference play by the junior righthander.
Both starters breezed through the first two innings and after Caron retired the Rams in the third following a two-out single by Tim Boyle, the Owls got on the board. First baseman, Pete Colon (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone), homered to left leading off the third against starter and loser Shawn Seales (2-5) and Keith Ramsey (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) did the same in the fifth.
Meanwhile, Caron continued to pitch well but was reached for two runs in the visitors sixth. Boyle led off the inning with a single and Kingsbury deposited a Caron pitch over the rightcenter field fence tying the game at 2-2.
The Owls then broke the game open in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Jeff Roma (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by John Quigley (Bensalem, Pa/Bensalem). Sam Sabolchick then sacrificed the runners up a base and was safe at first after Seales fielded the ball, dropped it and was late throwing to first. Al Roach (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) then singled off the third baseman's glove to knock in a run. A walk to Ramsey forced in another run but Seales got Colon to hit into a double play, scoring Sabolchick. The final run of the inning scored on a single by designated hitter Gene Burpoe, (Arlington, Va/Wakefield) who should see some additional playing time as starting rightfielder, Joe Lyall is on the shelf, suffering a broken right foot during Saturday's doubleheader.
The Owls would pick up a run in the seventh on Quigley's third hit on the afternoon and scored two unearned runs in the eighth off reliever Brad Kinder to finish the scoring.
Caron worked out of a none-out bases loaded situation in the ninth, inducing Jason Conlisk to ground back to the mound and into a doubleplay then retiring Boyle on a fly to left to end the game.
Along with Quigley's three hits, Al Roach and Gene Burpoe chipped in with two hits apiece.
The Owls are in a flat-footed tie for second place with Rhode Island, who won two out of three against Saint Joseph's, including Monday's 7-5 victory. The two teams meet this weekend in Kingston. Prior to that, the Owls travel over to Drexel on Tuesday to take on the Dragons at 3:00 p.m. and then take on Villanova on Wednesday at Richie Ashburn Field in South Philadelphia at 3:00 p.m.
