4.7.02 | Baseball
The Owls got off and running early scoring a pair of runs in the opening frame. Following a one-out walk to Keith Ramsey, senior Joe Lyall, who had four hits on the afternoon to raise his average to .418, tripled to the gap in rightcenter scoring Ramsey. Lyall then scored on an infield single off the bat of Sam Sabolchick.
Temple added another pair of runs in the second off starter and eventual loser, Eric Ruhland (1-6). Pete Colon singled and after moving to second on a groundout, Colon scored on a two-out single by Fred Hilliard. Ramsey and Lyall then produced back-to-back singles to give the home team a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Owl starter Alan Birnbrauer breezed through the first three innings but was touched up for a leadoff home run in the fourth by Brian Oakes. Birnbrauer worked out of any further trouble after Steve Harris singled and was balked to second with one out.
La Salle scored a pair of runs in the fifth after two were out. John Snyder walked, an RBI double by Mike Kelly and a single by Oakes brought the Explorers to within 5-3.
The visitors kept pecking away and tied the game in the sixth. After a Harris single, Matt Powell came on in relief for Temple. Following a single by Stasny, shortstop Phil Marino cleared the bases with a double to rightcenter. John Snyder followed with what looked like an RBI double to give La Salle the lead, but Snyder missed first base and was called out, leaving the game tied at 5-5.
The Owls untied the game and exploded for eight runs in the seventh, all with two outs. John Quigley got the Owls going with a one-out single. Following a strikeout for the second out, the Owls scored eight unanswered runs to break the game open. Back-to-back walks to Roma and pinch-hitter Al Roach loaded the bases and freshman Mike Weckenman drilled a two-out single to rightcenter to plate two runs. After a walk to Hilliard, Matt Kirsch replaced Wally Faulkner on the mound, and the lefthanded hitting Ramsey greeted the lefthand reliever with a double down the rightfield line scoring two more. Joe Lyall followed with a double and Quigley singled for the second time in the inning.
Matt Powell (4-2) picked up his second consecutive win in two days for the Owls while Eric Ruhland
(1-6), who pitched well for the Explorers between the third and seventh innings, suffered the loss.
The Owls travel to Newark, Delaware on Tuesday to take on the Blue Hens at 3:00 p.m. in a preview of the April 16th final of the 2002 Liberty Bell Classic when the two teams meet at Veterans Stadium at 5:00 p.m.
