DELAWARE USES FOUR HOME RUNS TO ROUT OWLS, 15-1, IN A GAME CALLED BY RAIN
4.9.02 | Baseball
The Blue Hens jumped on freshman pitcher, Chris Hamilton for a run in the first inning and after a leadoff home run by Brock Donovan in the second, Hamilton walked Mark Michael but retired the next two batters. Delaware then erupted for three hits, the big one a two-run homer off the bat of John Schneider, giving the Hens a six-run second and a 7-0 lead after two innings.
With freshman Bryan Stamm in relief, the Blue Hens continued their long ball hitting as Mike DeCarlo hit the third dinger on the afternoon to extend the lead to 8-0.
The Owls finally got on the board in the fourth. Following a walk and infield error that put runners on second and third, sophomore Al Roach plated Sam Sabolchick with a sacrifce fly to center, cutting the lead to 8-1. Unfortunately, for the Owls it would be the last time they would cross home plate on the cloudy and threatening afternoon.
Delaware continued to unload on Owl pitching as Reid Gorecki deposited a Stamm pitch over the leftfield fence for a two-run homer and a single, triple and groundout plated the third and fourth runs of the ining as Delaware raised their overall record to 16-14.
The lone bright spot on the day for the Owls was center fielder, John Quigley, who was named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week and had two hits. Temple dropped to 11-13 and travel to Lawrenceville, New Jersey on Thursday to take on Rider at 3:00 pm.
